  • Learning Lomilomi

On this journey we learn to hold sacred spaces for ourselves and others.

These two 5-day courses give the foundation of Lomilomi Massage and Bodywork. We learn the basic techniques and steps, principles and protocol of Lomilomi and start to develop the skills, understanding, and embodied awareness needed to perform a full-body massage on a personal or professional level. No previous massage experience is required — open to beginners and bodyworkers alike.

  • The Foundational Pathway

    Integrated Lomilomi Foundations (Level 1 & 2)

offers a complete introduction to Integrated Lomilomi Massage and Bodywork.

    Foundational Pathway

    (Level 1 & 2)

Level1 (back of the body) and Level 2 (front of the body) are designed to complement one another. Together they form a coherent foundational pathway that provide the skills, understanding, and embodied awareness needed to perform a full-body Welness Lomilomi massage grounded in safety, flow and presence, on a personal or professional level.

The Foundations are designed to prepare students responsibly and respectfully for further study while also standing on their own as complete and meaningful training. They are designed to be taken as a cycle, with time in between for practice and integration.

    Key elements of Level 1 & 2

    • Complete, well-understood and practiced basic version of full body Lomilomi Massage with oil
    • Hawaiian Joint work and stretching techniques
    • I’wa (in its full form: ka’alele au) – the “flying” dance, which is the basic step of all massage movement
    • Hula steps and dances for correct posture and connection to Hawaiian culture and spirituality
    • Breathing exercises
    • practicing with Kala'au sticks for flexible joints
    • Important Hawaiian principles
    • Massage Protocol

    Level 1

    Foundations of Lomilomi

Level 1 focuses on creating a contained and supportive environment for learning, and introducing Hawaiian principles and massage techniques working on the back side of the body.
The training begins without using oil, introducing stretching and joint-work as a gentle gateway to bodywork and touch. This allows sensitivity and trust to develop before moving into massage with oil.

We start learning the flowing strokes
on the back side of the body, working through the muscles of the back and legs while practicing the dance steps that make these movements possible.

    Elements of Level 1:

    • introducing Hawaiian principles as the base for bodywork and for working together in the group, forming a safe container.
    • grounding and safety in touch
    • Hawaiian stretching and joint work
    • working with oil on the back side of the body with flowing and nurturing strokes
    • developing awareness of spacing, timing, movement and breath
    • introducing Hula and Flying dances to develop posture, rhythm, and flow
    • connection to Hawaiian culture and spirituality
    • developing trust in your hands and your movement
Our massage studio in Aljezur offers a tranquil and inviting atmosphere, allowing you to escape the stresses of daily life. Surrounded by nature, our space enhances your relaxation experience, making every session rejuvenating. Level 2

    Completion and Integration

Level 2 builds directly on Level 1 and expands the work to include the front side of the body (Legs, Belly, Chest, Face/Hair), inviting greater sensitivity, clarity, and deeper understanding of the body. With the foundation established, students learn to bring the quality of listening and loving touch into a flowing full-body massage including more receptive and vulnerable areas of the body.

    Elements of Level 2:

    • deepening awareness of Hawaiian Principles
    • working with oil on the front side of the body
    • deepening the use of Hula and Flying dances as the vehicle of the massage
    • practicing with Kala'au sticks for flexible joints
    • refining direction, pressure, rhythm, and transitions in movement
    • integrating structure and flow into a coherent whole
    • developing confidence, and ease in longer sessions, allowing the work to become natural in the body
    • introducing massage Protocol of working with clients
    • integration of Level 1 and 2 into a professional full-body massage session of 1,5-2 hours

  • What should you expect from the full 4 level course?

The complete Integrated Lomilomi Massage and Bodywork course extends across 4 x 5-day blocks that amount to 160 hours, with a few weeks time purposefully planned in between each level, to give enough time for practice and integration.

That is a very important part as well, as each level is focusing on teaching new material, so practicing in between on your own will be
    essential for a good result.

By the end of the full course (4 levels) you will be able to perform the whole-body massage extended with many advanced techniques.

You will be able to acquire sufficient knowledge to offer 1, 2 or 3 hour treatments for individual needs.

On completion of the full course, participants will receive a certificate from the Witold Kucharczyk Polinesian Healing Arts Centre, with which they can offer a massage in the ‘reviving massage’ category.

Why does it take so long to learn this?

Temple-style Lomilomi bodywork is a form of Hawaiian massage through which healing, - or more precisely - self-healing took place in dedicated temples. To this day, a fundamental element for this type of bodywork is the creation of an atmosphere of sanctuary around the treatment itself, with recognition of the true divine nature of the treated person and the contrast between that and their perceived personality.

Lomilomi effectively reduces stress and tension trapped in the body by old patterns of behavior, thus it is commonly signified as a ‘rite of passage’—practiced at the point at which an individual enters a new part of their life. In ancient times such massages were accompanied by songs, prayers and rituals, which could at times last for several days.

"Although western civilization terms this kind of treatment "Hawaiian massage’"and often degrades it by offering it as a simplified commercial product, in reality it is much more, a sacred art– the art of touch. Only through persistent practice, application, the healing and maintaining the well-being of our own body and mind, constant training, and the comprehension of our souls and the cooperation and support of our spirits can this level be reached. It is also important to sustain a connection with Hawaiian spiritual culture. This aim is served by the ongoing practice of hula dancing."

    (Witold Kucharczyk)

Where do the taught Integrated Lomilomi® course elements originate from?

All of the content of the Integrated Lomilomi® Massage and Bodywork Trainings come from my teacher, Witold Stanislaw Kucharczyk. The bulk of his ‘temple style’ Lomilomi techniques originate from Kahu Abraham Kawai’i, and reached him via Susan Pai’niu Floyd who teaches this massage as Lomilomi Nui.

He also studied Lomilomi on Hawaii from Kumu Auntie Maile Napoleon, where living together with her family he learned the styles of both her family and her tribe. Auntie Maile’s teachers were Kahu Lanikila Brandt and Kumu Kalua Pai’ea Kaiahua. The techniques he learned from her form a part of the training course.

Finally, although he could never meet them personally, a great source of inspiration for him is Auntie Margaret Machado and Kahu Abraham Kawai’i.

He was lucky to learn Mana Lomi® from Maka’ala Yates, who’s knowledge was strongly influenced by Auntie Margaret.

The Integrated Lomilomi® course also contains the elemental Hawaiian massage known as Kahi Loa, which Serge Kahili King shared with the world.

There will also be time to get acquainted with the fundamentals of Hawaiian hula dancing, and to learn a few hula dances, that were passed down to me through Witold and Agnes Natkai, and was taught to them by Hawaiian teachers: Kumu Hula Loea Kawaikapuokalani Hewett, Hope Keawe and KumuRaylene Ha’alelea Kawaiae’a.

  • When will I get a Cerificate?

How can I continue learning with Integrated Lomilomi after Level 1 and 2?

What are the 4 levels about? when do I get a certificate?

The complete Integrated Lomilomi Massage course extends to four levels, blocks that amount to 160 hours.

On the foundational course (1-2 level) the whole-body massage is learned with streching and jointwork, and hula dances.

At the level 3 broader techniques and dances are taught. Level 4 includes further techniques and rituals for special cases and more Hula dances.

The four levels give you a full and deep understanding of Integrated Lomilomi Massage and Bodywork, so if you wish to work with clients professionally, it is advised to finnish them all and practice regularly giving and recieving massages and Hula dancing.

After the completion of the four levels, participants recieve a certificate from Witold K. Polinesian Healing Arts Centre with which they can offer a massage in the ‘reviving-massage’ category.

There are also further advanced training offered to those who completed the 4 levels.

What can I do after after Level 1 & 2?

    • After completing Level 1&2 participants may continue their Lomi journey with Levels 3&4, tought by Witold either in Hungary or wait for a workshop to be organised in the Algarve, Portugal or elsewhere.
    • Participants of any level of Integrated Lomilomi are also very welcome to repeat any Level that they have already completed - across Europe in the available Integrated Lomilomi trainings, for a reduced price.
    • After Level 1 and 2 you are also welcome to participate in our yearly OHANA ALOHA CAMP in Hungary, Kisnyalka, where students of different levels and nationalities come together to dance, massage, learn and enjoy to be in the LomiLomi Vibe in a beautiful countyside setting.

Should I do more than two Levels?

It is not necessary to complete all 4 levels of training, it is up to you to decide how far you wish to go with the learning process.

You may also interrupt and come back to a higher level years later, when you feel ready.

Level 1 and 2 together are the foundations of Integrated Lomilomi and together they give a very rich but basic knowledge of Lomilomi, with the potential of giving 1,5-2 hours long very effective full-body massages with oil, inclusive streching.

If you feel you are ready for working with clients after these two levels, you may start working and you may get a Certificate from your beginner trainer or from Witold K. about Welness Lomilomi Massage. This certifies the comletion of the courses.
